I'm thinking of buying a reverse osmosis system for my 20g tank, at the moment its a fish only tank however I'm thinking of adding a few corals. what do reverse osmosis systems require to set up and would it be cheaper buying RO water from my lfs instead. seeing that my tank is fairly small I've noticed that i can get a RO system from £50

thanks :good:

Well obviously you need an RO unit, for your size tank, I'd reccomend at least a 50GPD membrane. the 36 will be very very slow.

Accessories (which may or may not come with the unit):
-Flush valve/kit
-TDS meter
-appropriate fittings for wherever you plan to install it

thanks, so basically all i need to do is attach it to a tap with those accessories? is it really that simple to set up ? the 50gpd seems abit more complex than the 36gpd

Yeah, remember though. The GPD ratings assume the best possible conditions for the unit to operate in. In the wonderful world of theory they'll output at that rate... Back here in the real world where nothing's perfect (especially in the winter months), you'll struggle to get 1/2-3/4 of that output of water... that said, the 36gpd will prolly drive you bat crazy it's so slow ;)

If you can find them and have the space, poly, 50 gallon drums work great to store your water in. I have two of them in my basement and the R.O. unit runs until they are full. Don't forget that you need to have a submersible water pump in the barrels though to keep circulating the water, otherwise you build up nasty bacteria. Its also a good idea to have a heater in there to keep the water at the same temp. as your tank. If you have a python substrate cleaner, you can attach that to the water pump to refill your tank right from the barrel.
