I had my convicts for a little over a month now. 2 males and 3 females. And they still havent bred yet. Any wonder why? I saw a male and female lip locking but i wasnt sure if they were fighting or breeding. Any opinions?

do a 30% water change add a degree to the heater, then feed...

can now feed the whole of your house...

bit chewy tho

really if doesnt work they either aint a pair there, or are smaller than about 2" usually1"

hit my back and let me no how it goes

ARobinson

edit: what is the tank size, temp. etc?

They bred. About 3 days ago i saw eggs. But the eggs look the same as the firs day i saw them expect for a a few being whitish yellow instead of being transparent. Maybe those died or theyre the ones that are growing. No clue. Tank size is 10 gal with 5 convicts. People said it wouldnt happen and i was gonna get rid of some but the next day, there the eggs were. Go a tank divider so the mom and dad can stay with the eggs without too much paranoia. The convicts are about 1 inch. I always read the eggs hatch in 3 days.

ouch, cons need a much bigger tank :/

Yea i know. I wish i had the space or money for a bigger tank but i plan to jsut keep the 2 that are paired in there. But my question is how long does it take for the eggs to hatch. Ive read that some times the batch could be infertile. Its been about 4 days since the eggs were laid and still no sign of growth or improvement. I see that some of the eggs became a milkish color but only like 6-10 of them. THe rest seem to be still trasparent. Will the eggs hatch?

it will be very hard to get rid of the young cons to most fish shops, and most fish only have about a 2week period to consume the fry before they start getting nasty

Im sorry but that didnt answer any of my questions. And im not trying to sound like an ass. Im just really worried about the eggs. This is my first time experiencing this event.

They normally eat the eggs a few times when they first spawn.... You're going to have dead convicts soon if you don't get rid of some of them... convicts grow to 5'' so they wont last in that tank anyways.

Your right. I woke up today morning to find that the eggs were gone. So sad. They were protecting it so well for a few days and now they eat em. They keep going back to where the eggs were so im thinking maybe they will breed again. Does anyone no around how long it takes for them to spawn again after theyve eaten the eggs. Ohh and if it helps, they dug another spawn site too but dont really go there as much as the first spawn site. But any estimate on how many days? I was gonna go get a new tank today too just for them. Maybe ill be lucky next time.

Ah, convicts make great feeders! :D
I have a 30 gal for my pair..(s) I have two females so the male switches between them during spawns. That way i get twice as many fry for my Electric catfish :). But you you should get a bigger tank, 20 gal would work. Try to use a sponge filter so the fry wont get sucked up. Convicts BITE! careful...
What do you plan on feeding them to?

Does anyone know the waiting time in which they breed again after eating the freakin eggs?
