Hi,

Recently all my fish have been suffering from whitespot which i have been treating with 'Protozin', however it seems to be getting worse and killing alot of my fish. My LFS said to me that some fish dont react very well with the medicine which may cause death.

My tank is a 22g with 3 live plants and a piece of bogwood and has (well did have) 2 Dwarf Gouramis, 7 Neon Tetras, 6 Cardinal Tetras, 2 platys and 3 Guppies. The tank stats are p.H 7.2, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0 and nitrate 20.

I first noticed the whitespot one evening on a few of my Cardinal Tetras and Neon Tetras. The next day i found 4 Cardinal Tetras and 3 Neon Tetras dead which i couldnt do much about as i didnt have the med at this point as my LFS was closed. I got the medicine the next day and treated my tank with the dosage as instructed and all the advice i recieved from "Wilder" (thanks)

I have completed the whole course as described on the med but i am still loosing lots of fish. The only fish i have left in my tank are:-

2 Dwarf Gourami's
1 Platy
2 Female guppies
(My tank stats are all the same)

I am half tempted to move the fish i have left with some of their water and filter media to another tank and start my main tank from scratch again as it doesnt seem to be getting better as every morning my tank light goes on another fish has died. I really dont know what to do!

Any thoughts or advice very much appreciated

Many thanks,

Shaun

awww i'm sorry to hear that, whitespot can be really nasty to treat and there are various reports of super resistant strains that are resistant to the medication we're using. protozoin is supposed to be pretty good but i'd contemplate a change to another medicine for it, see if something else works.

i'd do a large 505 water change, then start a course of treatment with king british WS3, see if that works.

warning the following attempt at a cure is done so at your own risk, I can not be held responsable for any deaths resulting in its use.

cuprazin at the dose of 1ml per 50ltr
for 5 consecutive days, followed by a 50% water change and the addition of activated carbon to remove any leftover traces of copper.

copper kills, so overdosing will have a detrimental effect on your livestock, also remove any invertibrates (snails. shrimp etc) that you wish to keep alive.

I used Protozin, this was on new clown loaches in quarantine. I removed decor to leave bare tank except one log (was no substrate anyway). Then raised temperature to 30c, did daily cleanings on the bottom of the tank and took out around 50% of the water a day, also I used salt, a salt bath may help as well (though I never used one). I want a UV filter soon, to try and stop this sort of thing happening on quarantines.
