Do bettas need to have substrate on the bottom or can I just leave it bare-bottomed.

Bare bottom is fine, many breeders use bare bottom tanks for convenience.

you can have it bare bottom, but it doesnt look that great.

Will the poop and other waste be overwhelming like goldfish?

Oh and I just figured that the gravel could be sharp on their fins. I just brought home my first one. It's in a 2.5 gallon tank right now, but I'm pretty sure that I'll be advancing to a 10 gallon soon.

I have had to put one of my bettas in a bare bottom because he kept trying to move the gravel at night, and no they don't tend to unless you feed them to much/to often

you could always try using sand, i am and it looks nicer then bare-bottomed
