I've been reading some posts on taking out the carbon in your filter if you have live plants.....have an eheim 2217 canister filter and can't get the top off....unbuckled all the clips...stupid question....how do lift the top off....and will it spill water out if have the valves shut off????

Not sure about the carbon im quite new to the planted bit myself but as for the 2217 you need to release the pressure inside the cannister i unclip mine and take it to the sink and open the valves letting all the water out the lid will then come off

Yes never use carbon in a planted tank, it removes important nutrients like iron. Have a read of the link in my sig :)
