Nitrites Still Not Going Fast Enought.....

Mine's still doing that too  Ammonia disappears in 12 hours but nitrIte takes 18 ish  And same as you it has been like this for 10 days - I have timed it everyday and there is no change.

My potential stock option included 12 danios so I think I will get them this weekend - but I'm not going to add anything else until I'm sure its ok

Its odd that mine and yours are doing this - no-one else seems to have had this problem. Wonder if its anything to do with our water quality? Are you UK?

ETA - just read your profile - your only about 60 miles from me - wonder if that is a coincidence???
18 hours is fine. I would stock if I were you.

Im looking at 6 danio's and 1 RTBS and 2 Pear Gourami's a few Khuli Loaches and 2 Pleco (Smaller ones)

I guess the 6 danio's and RTBS and maybe 2 Gourami's should be a good start. let it settle and get the rest.....

PS.... Sarahp Yeah it is a bit of a freak similarity. water is harder our way. more chalk. Who provides your water???

Just a thought - are you guys Thames water??

If so I think they use Chloramine so if you don't use the right water treatment you are adding more ammonia than you think.

Chloramine is a combination of chlorine and ammonia much more stable but when some water treatments get rid of the chlorine part they leave behind guess what .....

yup Ammonia.

You can't get rid of chloramine by standing / aerating or any other reasonable non chemical method in a reasonable time frame.

The only treatment that I know for sure deals with Chloramine properly is Tetra Aquasafe.

Just a thought .....

Oh I am on United Utilities, used to be North West Water, so for now I get good old unstable corrosive chlorine ...

South East Water. I use the API conditioner and it will deal with Chloramine just needs higher dose to be effective and i have used it to that amount.

Also i have tested the ammonia and it is 0 and got the nitrite to 0 then added a new batch of ammonia and timed it.

How do you find out about the type they use???

i found a section on there site for most bits but it states they use chlorine i think but its not too clear.

They have to publish regular water data and file a report annually on the water composition and treatment, I would be surprised if it isn't on their website somewhere.

It is for United Utilities on a water treatment area by water treatment area, it even tells you which reservoirs etc the water is drawn off.

If you can't find it I am sure their customer services will be able to answer the questions.

This is a link to the statement on water disinfection Water Treatment (United Utilities)

This is a link to the 2006 water quality report Local Authority Report (United Utilities Area)

Please note these are for my area ... your water supplier will have similar somewhere ....
