After being treated for white spot which is now clear and doing daily water changes to reduce the nitrite levels to 0, the two cardinal tetras we have left really don't seem to be doing well. They are at opposite ends of the tank low down in the plants most of the time and don't even emerge when I put food in. Their colour looks paler than usual and I don't know if they are still weak and will improve.

Some advice related to this issue was posted in the older thread you have here:

It is possible the two will die, as they have had to deal with ich and medications for ich, and characins (this family includes the tetras) do not do well with any medication or chemical additives. Keeping them as free of stress as possible is about all you can do. I would not advise moving ahead as I suggested in the other thread until you are fairly certain these two will survive.

Partial water changes of 50-60% of the tank volume are the best treatment now. If ammonia and nitrite remain at zero, you can go to a partial water change every second or third day and see what develops. Don't try to feed them if they are not eating or showing any interest. Just keep them quiet. I know they need more to reduce stress but this is not advisable just yet.
