Nitrite Taking 24h To Drop

Hi all,

I have been fishless cycling my tank for 3 weeks using the add and wait method. The ammonia is being processed from 4ppm to 0 ppm in less than 12 hours but the nitrite takes 24h to drop back to 0. Question is, am I cycled, as the nitrite is a by product of ammonia processing is that the reason for it still being present for more time than the ammonia?

You'll be cycled once your ammonia and nitrite are at 0. Tha ammonia is turned into nitrite by the good bacteria and this in turn is then turned into nitrate.

The fastest cycle I've ever had using the flake food method was 4 weeks, so you've got a little way to go yet by the sound of things
