My filter died on me about 4 days ago, and I replaced it with a Hagen Aquaclear. I do a weekly water test, and this week I found my nitrite level within the unsafe-danger levels. I thought my tank was stable until my filter died, so I haven't restocked on stress reliever and the sorts. Is there anything I can do to reduce the levels now? My my tiger barbs do not look happy and I'm worried. It's 10:30 right now so I can't drive down to the LFS. I believe the high Nitrite caused my recent algae outbreak as well.

Edit: I do know that it is probably caused by the fact that there aren't any bacteria in the new filter.

Do a 90% water change when you can. Leave enough water in the tank t allow your fish to swim upright.
Then in the morning check and if necessary do another large water change.

Thanks for your help, I went to petco today for the some chemicals to lower nitrite, although I would up taking a brand new 29 gallon home as well.
