Did a test tonight as i always do ona thursday and in my community tank the nitrite level has shot up for some reason...

Nothing been added to the tank, feeding them as always have done, no deaths yet, clean the gravel as normal, aint done nothing diffrent at all.....

What could be causing it to raise suddenly..

I have done a 35% water change after noticing it and added some treatment to help drop it down..

Does anyone know why this could of happend??

Thanks in advance :)

How many gallons is the tank.
How many fish and which type.
Do you have alot of fry in the tank, as I know you have livebeares.

Hi 5teady :)

Did you clean or change your filter media? It might be a good idea to test some water straight out of the tap, even if it's only to rule that out a a possible problem.

The tank in question is.....

24x12x15

18.7 uk gallons - 70.79 Litres

There is same as always in this tank - its always had the same amount in for long time,
6 platys,
3 mollies,
5 guppies,
2 small albino plecs
1 common plec
3 corys

no fry in this tank.. all get transfered when born to other tank.

Not certain what could cause that unless there was a lot of uneated food or possibly a dead fish that was missed that decayed. Just keep an eye on it and do water chagnes as needed.

I know plecs are massive waste producers, when you did the gravel vac was the water really mucky.
Whats your nitrate reading.

Just realised, that big plec died in there and was decayed, do you think that could of caused the nitrite to go up?

I forgot all about my plec that died. it was in the tank for a while before i noticed it dead.. i did a waterchange after that as wilder said and treated for disease just incase there was anything.

Yes that what caused it.
Also it can cause desease so I would do some water changes for a few days.

I did a 35% change after i noticed it, also if you remeber i did one after i found the plec dead.. and treated the tank.

Il do small 15% changes for the next few days if thats going to be ok :)

Thanks all,

Wilder to the rescueeeeeeeeeeee :)
