Nitrite Help...

ok my nitrite has risen to 0.5 what can i do to reduce it back to 0. im doing daily waterchanges bit what else can i do?

Keep up with the water changes, add carbon to the filter if you haven't got any in there already and make sure you cut the feeding right back.

Got to find out why it has risen.
Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How often do you maintain the tank.
Added any new fish.

yes there is 2 new fish which are 2 african butterflys added about 2 weeks ago

Tanks overstocked, maybe wan't to think of adding another filter, as it sounds like the one filter not coping with the fish load..

yes i have that but its not in i was told not to have it in all the time? shall i put it now and for how long or should it be in all the time??

if i add another filter i only have one on me atm its a fluval 2 i think will it help for the time being??

I would invest in a fluval 4 to run with the fluval two.
Explains it as the fluval 2 is not big enough for that tank.
Get you some info.

Always best to over filter a tank, I run two filters in all my tanks.

i am saying i have a SPARE fluval 2 but running on a fluval 3+ at the moment.. im saying i could add the fluval 2 to the tank?

Yes thats fine then.
But put a sponge from the mature filter into the spare filters even if you have to chop it up.
Then just fill the spaces with new sponges.

Right ok done that

so i have my fluval 3+ and fluval 2 in the tank... doing daily water changes... nitrate dropped to 0.25 were getting there !!

alos theres carbon now into the fluval 3+

and i will go to my LFS and see about a filter upgrade...

How big is your tank? If it's the tank in your sig, then it looks kind of small.

If those are live plants, don't use carbon in your filters! It will remove the nutrients they need.

Carbon IMH is next to useless anyway. Its effective life span short (2 days according to a detailed, yet unproved recent thread on the topic) & when past use can leech all the contaminants back into the water column. Change it at least every other week.

I agree: For nitrite spikes, you need to know why (if you can <- prevention is better than cure) and then to reduce, water changes...

Right problem sorted!! thankyou to everyone who helped me solve my issue i have both filters running fluval 3+ and fluval 2 i also have got rid of alot of fish! and kept to my discus! which are about 2"
