Nitrate not only unhealthy for fish

That would really stir things up in a lot of agricultural regions in the US and UK. Yikes. A lot of our members have fairly scary tap water sources.

Scarry stuff...
Scarier is our lack of testing and regulation, especially with the new regime were less regulation and reporting is the new norm.

My well water has variable nitrate levels ranging from 5-20 ppm. The county government does not perform testing in homes on well water. I only found out about the nitrates in my water when I began this hobby. Now we only drink RO water. My soft water fish are on RO water too. My hard water fish are in well water in densely planted tanks to mitigate the nitrate exposure. My experiment with nitrate binding resins was only partially effective.

I'm grateful for my tap water. The latest nitrate reading from my water supplier is:
minimum <1.5
Maximum 6.0
Average 3.3

Unit mg/l nitrate-NO3 (same unit as our test kits)
