Due to my hubby's incessant pleading  , I finally gave in and let him purchase a niger trigger yesterday, only after being reassured that it is really a reef safe fish. What do you all think about it? He has been nothing but a good little fish so far, but I was just wondering if any of you have nigers in your reef tanks too.

Oh, yes, knotice the discrepency on max size... Still 12" is a bit much fish in your tank :(

Triggers are cool... but you might want to do a search on this homie!
I doubt all your other fishwill make it through the pecking order... Also they goet to be ... well sorry to say... longer than your tank is wide... or about there.

50cm 19"?

They Are rated as peacful as far as triggers go... Just looked up them in Marine Fishes (schott W. Michael)... Says they might nip your hand.

I really do not think this fish is suitable for a 48g tank. The book says 75... but I find that hard to believe either if they SHOULD get 19"

Here is a STORE that flat out says they are NOT reef safe:

Well, you are no noob, so you know very well that any unresearched livestock...
OK I will stop there, but feel free to come visit for some spankings (perhaps I am changing from man-slave to man-MASTER!)!!!

GL
spankings are cool..........either getting or giving! :hey:

But anyhoo...........my lfs said that despite what I have been told, they really are a peaceful and usually reef safe fish. I had argued about this with my hubby and the lfs, but my lfs is really a great one..............so I gave in. The lfs knows about the size of our tank..........so I am not sure if they made a mistake or what..........I guess I will keep a close eye out and hope for the best.

thanks for your post, now when's this spanking gonna happen? :kana:

:) well soon as we lock our respective spouses in the closet...

Here is the thing, Some articals say they are reef safe, because that particular variety does not eat coral (but will eat all crustations) Triggers teeth are like rodents in that they are always growing. So, ANY trigger needs to chomp. But, lets forget about the chomping for a sec... you know why they are called trigger fish right? OK, I don't either, but I think it is because they jut around the tank alot. a 12" fish that likes to swim alot needs at least, at least 6'.

Of course you may, may have success, but... guppy in a cup...

Sneak it back and tell him it died?

GL either way.

(As you know NONE of my info is from experience and purly conjecture. So, I will still spank you no matter what your decision is).
     You are such a hoot.

Now see, that is what I thought. I mean, I really thought I had done my research and thought they weren't safe in our tank..... then I was told that they were safe. :dunno: I kept telling my hubby "look, they have TEETH man" but did he listen? NO! My favorite LFS......I have done business with them for years, and they have never ever let me down, so that is why I went ahead and trusted what they said. Yikes, what am I gonna do??!?! We have so much live rock there is no way I am going to catch him without stressing everyone else in the tank and taking it all out!

I've always wanted a trigger. If I ever start a salt tank, that would be the only fish I kept. But I really don't know how they would behave in a reef. I know this much...my lfs has a few and they're fairly large, they keep them with fish of a similar size. One of the triggers did kill a lionfish, from what I'm told.

They have one that I just love, looove. He reminds me a lot of my midas, very people friendly and bouncy around the tank, but his teeth are unbelievable! When I went in the lfs the other day they pulled me to the side and said that the trigger had just bit a small child who was in there with it's parents, we all had a good laugh  (not at the expense of the child, just at the situation in general, people not watching their kids etc)

Best of luck,Ms.Olive!!

Yes Adrianl, you have a point. There are really no clear cut rules in this hobby, unfortunately. I wish I knew what to do!

Hubby is the main breadwinner at the moment. I do work, but only when I feel like it. :D So, yes he is financing the tank if that is what you are getting at. I should let him feel like he has a say in it too............. :D

I guess I will just watch, wait and see. :/

Wuv, you are right, he is so bubbly around the tank and such a fun fish. He hasn't touched anyone yet, so I am keeping my fingers crossed and then double crossed again! And I stuck my hand in the tank the other day without thinking about it, and he didn't even try to come my way, thank goodness! He really is a fun fish, so, if he does end up destroying the tank, I will make the decision on whether or not to get rid of him. I might even keep him then, since my hubby loves him so much. Maybe then I could have the boxfish I always wanted..............a little cowface puffer or something like that.

What to do?? What to do.....................

If he tears up the tank you might as well keep him  :hey: .
I was just looking at your pretty pictures of your shrimp and it reminded me of this thread ( ) so I thought I'd come peek...glad I did :D

How big is he right now? tiny? I wanna see him, post a pic :hyper: c'mon!! :hyper:

Hmm ... I am almost 100% positive that triggers are called triggers because of their dorsal and anal fins. When frightened triggers (in nature) will dart into a cave, or some such hiding place, and extend their "trigger" fins thus locking them into the hiding spot until the threat passes.

If anyone knows different, please correct me. :D

Dont want to alarm anyone, but I once watched as a niger trigger swim up to a small clown and proceed to pluck its eye out. Reef safe? They dont seem to go after the corals, but the rock under them is fair game. :sly: Dog Face puffers are also killers, my parents have a fish only aggressive with all the aboved mentioned (excluding the box fish, on my insistance they not get one). Keep a good eye on him, a good test is to drop in a small feeder goldfish or guppy (depending on his size) and watch what happens. How big is he now?
Oh, Your husband should know by now that you are always right!
:-( Yes, right away dear...
