Hi I`m completely new to Tropical Fish and this is my 1st attempt at a Tank of any sort, I found this forum by chance and I`m glad I did, I`ve found it a brilliant source of information and advice it must be one the most friendly forums around.
I`ve decided on a Mbuna Cichlid Tank mainly because the of the Tanks and Fish that always caught my eye seemed to be this type especially the setups on the forums here sort of provided the inspiration to at least try and do something the same. Also Tanks a Lot and Brewyn wouldn`t let me do anything else ! (I`ve got to thank those 2 for helping me get this far, thanks guys)

Tank - Aqualantis / Evasion 120XL
Volume: 264 litres / 70 Gallons
Width/ Length: 120 cm - Depth : 40 cm - Height: 50 cm
Heaters - 2 x Aquaone 200W
Filter - External Fluval 305 (1000lph) (Will Probably need more filtration eventually)
Lighting - 2 x 30W Daylight (would like to change one if anyone has a suggestion)
Rocks - B & Q River Cobbles (Identified as metamorphic rocks by Bobf)
Substrate - Will be Playsand I think.

The rockwork seemed to be the hardest part so far , finding them, getting hold of a pan big enough to boil them in and finding a way of stacking them up safely (it looks easier than it is), they were Pressure washed then boiled for around 20mins (not microwaved for 2mins as someone suggested to me!)
Egg Crate was used to try and spread the weight of the rocks.

Picture of Rocks Boiling Tea Towel was to protect the pan from scratches.

Couple of Pictures of the Rockwork so Far. I`ve tried to make a few caves and room round the back and sides for escape routes/swimming space. There are more rocks to come not sure I dare go much higher on this side.

********Update 24/05/06********

Ok I`ve done a bit more aquascaping, I`m fairly happy with it (at the moment) only one rock resting partly on the back and I think I`ve provided lots of hiding places and areas to swim in including round the back of all the rocks.

I`ve bought / cleaned / boiled ! these pebbles to place in and around the larger rocks as suggested.

These are the comparisons with Playsand from Argos (left) and the darker B & Q (Right) I didn`t really like the darker B & Q sand I thought the lighter and finer Argos sand would look better.

This Picture shows the sand after just been washed once.

And after about 10 more washes the water runs a lot clearer.

********Update 24/05/06********

Ok I had a problem with the floor in my living room being uneven, I should of checked with a straight edge but the uneveness didn`t show until the weight of the water was in the tank making the cabinet bow, I took everthing out apart from about an inch of water and the sand, I slipped some 3mm thick strips of wood under the middle 2 rows of feet to make the floor even then put everything back again it was a pain but I think had to be done.

This afternoon I filled the tank with water and turned the filter and heaters on , the filter (Fulval 305) sounds quiet and seems to work really well despite bad press on the forums here, I set the temp on the Heaters to 30 C 86 F apparentely a higher temp (upper 80`s) can help the beneficial bacteria grow/increase quicker.

Next I added the ammonia (From Homabase= 9.5% ammonia) I tried to work out (roughly) how many ml of ammonia to add, I need to add about 5 parts per million of ammonia -

My tank is 264 Litres - I took this as about 250 litres of water so I have 250,000 ml of water, divide this by a million which makes 0.25ml times it by Five as I need 5ppm that makes it 1ml of Ammonia to add but as my Ammonia is only 9.5% strength I multiplied my 1ml by 10 (rounded up) to equal 10ml ish of Ammonia to be added ! Well that was my theory anyway it may be totally wrong !

My faith in my Maths/Formula wasn`t that great so I added 2ml at first then another 2ml and so on until I got roughly about 5ppm by adding 8.5ml of Ammonia, maybe this was because I had a lot less water than I stated in the Formula do to the rocks/substrate ?

I`m picking up some Gravel from a mature Tank to place in the filter hopefully tomorrow but I`ve also added API Stress Zyme to kick start the Cycling.

This is how the Tank is looking at the moment (The dots are air bubbles on the glass)

I know theres not a lot yet but I`ll try and keep up to date and please let me know your honest opinions as it developes

Yes sorry I`ve only started putting the rocks in theres about 20 in total, don`t think I dare go much higher on that side with the rocks I`ll see . I`ve been constantly re-arranging them all day trying to find the best way to stack them.

Nice so far ! ,

Looks like a reallly smart tank !

I want to set up a mbuna tank one day

Nice tank. I'm going through exactly the same as you at the moment. Got to pressure wash and boil my rocks tomorrow. Good thinking using the teatowel.

Thats a seriously nice looking tank nick. the height of the rocks look fine to me, I would try to bring a few towards the front of the tank, almost to give you a land slide effect. your lights you mentioned may be a bit on the bright side 2x30 w, I cant speak for anyone elses malawis but mine go very skittish if the lights are too bright, and tend to group together, subdued lighting always works well. but so far I am impressed with your home and your tank, will follow your thread closely to see how your going on. better photo. :good:
nice one mate.

 It gives me the urge to start a new one!!!!!

very nice!!

i'm with brewyn, bringin some smaller stones, you can even line the tank with a rolled up towel and kinda drop small pebbles down the pile so they look landslide-ish.

the adjacent corner in front maybe stack some there too not as high or large of rocks but it will give you an up close view of hidey holes.

Nice tank Nick!
I've not kept Mbuna chilids before but i just had an idea that might be cool. If you put rocks on the right side of your tank (not the back but like actually build it up on the right side piece of glass). Then you could see the fish back behind the rocks and give yourself different view of them espesially the ones like might get bullied more or that just like to hide more. It's just an idea i had.
:D

Since you're using pretty big rocks you might want to cheat a bit to create some extra voids/hidy holes?

You could use some plastic pipes etc near the back to give the voids for the fish to hide in but disguise it when you cover it over with new rocks etc, so it's not visible from the front?

Just a thought - helps to keep the weight/cost down a bit too but gives the fish what they need!

It’s finally started, great stuff! I have been looking forward to this build.

First off I am going to repeat what brewyn said and that is that the tank is really nice. The grey trim and the stand are spot on and they go well with the room and the wooden flooring. I like the black background, it’s going to make the rocks and the fish stand out very well. What did you use? Plus it will also hide algae that will eventually grow on the glass behind the stones in places that you cant reach.

The rocks look great; and I would stick with that height. All that work has finally paid off eh! Also that’s a nice pot but it’s no way as big as mine, did you tell the person that you borrowed it off what you where using it for?

Great start and good luck!

Thanks for the comments guys (and mamafish !)

I have slight concerns about the lights I`m open to suggestion on that one I want the fish to look and feel there best, the lights do seem bright (2 x 30w seems normal for a tank that size ?)but maybe when the substrates in and more rocks it will absorb the light a bit more ?, I thought about changing one (maybe the backlight) for a blue tint one ?

I`ll definately put some smaller stones near the bottom of the larger rocks I think thats a good idea, as for the other corner - create a space in the tank in the corner that can be seen when your sat on the sofa ? I`ll have a go today and see. I`ll try some more caves/holes/voids , the fish can swim round the back of the rocks apart from the top ones which touch the back piece of glass.

The background is just a plain black Marina one secured with selotape, not sure I`m keen about the prospect of algae on my new rocks.

Tanks - No the pot isn`t as large as your beautys it was the best I could do, I borrowed it hence the tea towel to try and protect it each rock had to be individually boiled , I tried "old people" as you recommended with no luck also charity shops. I`ve had some strange looks when asking for a pot to boil rocks in next time I`m going to make a different excuse up, I tried explaining to my girlfriends grandma and she thought I was boiling my fish !

 Put a smile on my face on this most wet and horrible of days.

Also your new camera looks really nice in the thrid picture! it not only looks nice but it seems to produce nice pic as well, which is alway a benefit.

Tanks my new camera not arrived yet I couldn`t wait so I borrowed my dads (Samsung digimax A4 4mp)should of mentioned that but the pictures look alright. Looking forward to getting my new camera hopefully tomorrow I`ll take some when I get it.

Ammonia - No Tanks not yet I think homebase (Large DIY store chain) is apparentely the place for it hopefully it won`t be a problem, I`ve ordered a API GH/KH kit (to go with my API master test kit) and some Seachem Prime also. I go on Holiday on the 23rd - 30th in Cornwall so hopefully Fish after then providing everythings ok. I may need to alter the PH/hardness of my water it comes out of the tap at about 8.1 but then in the morning if left to stand in a bucket drops to around 7.2 I presume this is something to do with it being soft water ?
