Care : Easy to keep and breed once a pair have been established. Cave work recommended as fish usually spawn between two rocks. Plants kept to a minimum as these fish are basically vegetarian.
Diet : Vegetable pellets, Invertebrates (brine shrimp), not fussy eaters.

Temperament : Aggressive to Conspecifics
Sexual Differences : Males are bigger with longer dorsal and anal fins. Females have pronounced red colour on abdomen on maturity and are more colourful than males.
Breeding : Reasonably easy. Females will entice males to a spawning site then lay eggs loosely in a pit in sand or gravel. If other females present they will deposit all eggs together and guard them in a gang. Eggs are large (2mm). Fry are free swimming after twelve days. Feed on brine shrimp nauplii then crushed flake.
General Comments : a beautifully coloured cichlid with a blue green head and back and red-gold in males to bright gold body in females. Females keep black lateral line with black triangular spot right in the middle. The males lose line and spot. Females can get more colourful. Young fish do not show colour until they reach 80mm until then they are very nondescript.
