I'm not sure if this is the same for all newts but for my Chinese Fire Bellied newt, all you have to do is to look in the area between the back legs and where the tail joins the body for testes. If they're big, it's a male. Caudata.org has a lot of useful info on newts, so I'm sure your answer can be found there. :nod: HTH.
