hi guys, as you can see i need a little advice, i've kept FW fish for 5 years now and am now looking to convert my 15G FW tank to a SW tank, have done some research but im just really conferming what it is i need..

i have a good heater and filter is it essential to have a skimmer?? i am looking to have gobys and like what, and maybe a small reef tank..

Help please!!!!!

i do know about cycling. oh and also im lucky enough to live by the sea - so could i use the sea water and cycle that??

any advise would be appreciated..

so im thanking you in advance

thankyou

Welcome to the salty side :good:

Start a thread in the nano section so we can watch your progress and help you :good:

Interesting question about the sea water - in theory you could collect sea water BUT it is unlikely to be contaminate free so would probably be better to make your own :good: by the way, it is not the water that cycles, it is the Live rock and sand that carries the bacteria. If you buy good quality lr from an established tank then you will be well on your way :good:

A skimmer is not needed in a tank that small - just weekly water changes of approx. 20%.

What are your plans for the tank, maybe a goby and shrimp combo?

ok thanks for that - yeah sorry i did mean to say the lr or sand cycled - not water!! but hay!!

ok - so no skimmer! thats cool. what is the min size tank you could get away with - without using a skimmer??

yeah combo will probably be goby and cleaner shrimp. how does that sound??

wife quite liked a scooter blenny! but i take it the tank would be too small for one - yes??

if i didnt go for live rock- the live sand? where would i be able to get some from ?? as my local lfs generally specialises in trop FW fish and access!!

is there anything else i would need?? apart from heater, filter, as the tank i would like to change is 20''long and 20'' high??

why do i feel like a kid -- im so excited??!!! :hyper:

Could totally have a goby/pistol shrimp combo.

A scooter blenny would be ok in that size tank but the difficulty is getting one that accepts frozen or flake food. In the wild these things mostly just eat copepods or other pod life forms. Its exceptionally difficult to raise enough pods to feed a scooter in captivity in a small tank like that. So unless you get one that eats frozen i'd stay away.

As far as other things you'd need, I'd add a powerhead for some extra flow as the natural reef is a very turbulent environment. Also, if you do want to start getting into corals you'll have to significantly upgrade your lighting and add even mroe flow.

 think that's how we all feel.

Yeah the goby/shrimp combo is a great idea, check out youtube - there are a couple of excellent little videos on there :good:

My sister runs her 26 gallon without a skimmer, but I run my 26 gallon with a cheap boyu skimmer. As long as you are good with the water changes it will be fine.

I would suggest you steer clear of the scooter blenny - far too difficult a fish for a newbie, too specialised a diet - you don't want to struggle and see him waste away because you can't supply the copepods he needs

Don't forget to post pics :good: and keep asking questions

The live rock is your filter :good:

Yes a heater

checkout http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=200 for live rock in your area also good old ebay

You asked about what you will need:

Extra power head - I went for the KORALIA as recomended by the guys on here, Koralia nano would be good (check out ebay)

Refractometer, don't bother with a hydrometer - again ebay

marine salt

Sand, you will need approx 10 lb bag - don't bother with live sand - it will seed from the Live rock

Testing kits for nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and PH - just to start with you will need more a little later - Salifert tests are generally considered the best - prepare yourself for a shock on price!

Water container - food safe, Camping and General do them for a good price - you will probably just buy your water as you don't need that much each week rather than buying a RO unit

Container to mix your water - empty salt container is ideal I find - see if lfs will give you one

Cheap power head for mixing water

Cheap heater to heat water when mixing

Syphon

Good quality tank scrubber and algae magnet - you get what you pay for here, don't go cheap! Ebay again

Ro unit from RO man - you can get one for about £65, a sound investment in the long run (if you decide to invest in a bigger tank later)

Live Rock - you will need about 6 K - look to get it from a reefer breaking down a tank - you will get a better deal, less die off if it is local ( I transported mine for an hour in water and had little die off) and better rock with lovely coraline growth and more hitchhikers - a win, win situation

My suggestion to you would be go slowly, plan and do your research - ask us loads of questions, we have all been in your situation and done the same You could go out and buy all this stuff from your lfs, BUT it will COST you, a little time and planning can save you an awful lot of money and boy, you will need money because this is an adictive, expensive hobby + the planning is fun :good:

ps don't believe everything your lfs tells you!

thanks for all that guys - big help!

TRUST me - i DONT believe much that my lfs store says!!! mine specialise in tropicals - not marine and most of what they have told me in the past has been complete and utter BULL**1t!!!!

so will trust you guys a lot more!

will hopefully get everything i need within the next few weeks and will go from there!!
