Hello everyone!

I'm Jinty from Fife in Scotland. Live in a mini zoo with all sorts of animals. I'm a jewellery maker, mother of 3 and general slave to the animals.

Used to keep fish many moons ago, just cold water ones though. I recently bought a Fluval Chi tank 17L. I added a heater and an air pump to make it better for function. Currently housing one male fighter and two zebra danios (I know they need more friends). So far all is going well and they seem happy together.

Thinking of adding another 4 Danios soon but wondered if I should go for same species or could I mix? And also going to add some Cherry Shrimp I saw which looked fascinating! Would they be enough for bottom feeding? Or should I consider a little catfish too?

Hope to continuing learning, as I've been reading up on here for a while before joining you all. Have already seen my next tank which is huge! But want to run this little baby successfully first before parting with the cash.

Welcome to the forum!

The fluval chi is quite limiting in terms of space. Zebra danios are VERY active fish and need quite a bit of room for swimming....preferably three feet.

Not sure if the tank is big enough for a Betta, but hopefully someone else can advise,

hi there and welcome!!

i'm laura from penicuik, midlothian!! not too far away!! i would agree with zz that you tank is too wee for danios...they need a lot of swimming space!! i would think of rehoming them to a bigger tank or possibly returning them to the shop if you havent had them too long. if thats not possible, try sale or swap on gumtree. i think your shrimp idea is a good one...they are fascinating and very pretty!! i'm afraid i know nothing about bettas!! i am sure some of the others will be able to suggest what you could stock with but as far as the danios go, i would seriously consider rehoming them. don't worry about getting it wrong though...we've all made those kind of mistakes when starting out!!

good luck and look forward to hearing what you decide on!

Hi Laura!

Not too far from me at all. It's a real shame about Danios, they seem quite happy though I have to say. My friend who has kept fish for 30 years thought they would be ok. Too late to return them. Will have to find someone to take them if they are going to be suffer in that tank. What do you have?

hi again jinty!

i have just set up a new tank. have not had fish for over a year as i lived in a first floor flat!! i used to have a 200l fluval roma with 4 discus, 8 sterbai corys, 12 cardinals and a queen arabesque. i also had a 60l with 10 neons 4 guppies and a few adolphi corys. in the flat, after arguing with the landlord that 200l would not explode and fllod the neighbours (to no avail!) i had a small tank with 4 guppies 8 harlequins and 4 albino corys.

in the new tank, (90l) i am hoping to keep 8 tiger barbs, 10 cardinals and 6 albino corys. it has almost finished cycling so i am looking forward to getting some fish in it!!

it is a shame about your danios..as you can see i have not had them myself but did look into getting themm for my 60l and discovered it wasn't big enough!! maybe if they seem happy enough you could keep them??? i'm not sure. try posting your concerns in the section appropriate to danios and i am sure one of the experts there will be able to advise you. i'll keep my fingers crossed for you. sure we will speak again soon.

Thanks for the welcome :D

I have just discovered one of my dog mates used to be a fish specialist with Bristol Zoo and bred Danio's. She assures me they will be quite happy in there, and as they seem content I'm going to keep them there just now.

hi jinty,

thats great then. glad you are able to keep them. they are lovely fish!!

:hi: to the forums! I'm glad that you found this site because it is one of the best you'll ever find. If you need help go to the beginners section of the forums. Also make sure to check out this link. It will show you how to cycle your tank the best and fastest way possible, fishless. I hope that you feel welcomed. Also don't forget to ask alot of questions, after all that's what we're here for.

For the method I'm doing the add and wait, because I feel it is the best method for me.
