Hello I'm bonny and I am a newbie to the forum. I have 55 gallon freshwater aquarium that has 2 angelfish,2 glofish, 2 gourami, 1 mickey mouse platy (her buddy died), a ghost knife, 2 koi and just got a blue crayfish. The tank has been really good until the last week our nitrite level has spiked and our fish have gotten kind of poorly. The swordfish has gotten what looks like ich (currently being treated), the crayfish got sick and laid on his back for 3 days but seems to have bounced back and the ghost knife has as of today got a red spot on the white part of his tail and has been swimming on his side and staying around the filter. We have done water changes and even medicated the tank to try bring down the nitrite left level with no change so far.I believe this is apart of the nitrogen cycle. Basically I am screaming help! Lol

It's the koi. These are big ( 2-4 foot ) fish that crap a lot . That means that they make ammonia. They really need 1000 gallon ponds to thrive.

The black ghost knife is a voracious predator which should grow to 2-3 feet.

I think you should rehome the koi and ghost knife and then prepare to fish in cycle. Go to the beginners resource center. My signature will take you there.

Well my ghost knife officially kicked the bucket as I was typing that out :( thank you for responding I will go there now and check it out.

:rip: It would of been difficult to find a home large enough for him anyway. I hope it goes well! :)

+1
Sorry about the ghost knife. They are beautiful fish but he would have eaten your other fish, except the koi.

Koi are coldwater fish and wouldn't be happy in the high temps of tropicals.
