Hi all. Hopefully someone can help me out. I recently got a 22 gallon tank and have put my first stock of fish into it. Within a day one of the Platys had whitespot and now one of the Black Tetras have it aswell. I got a treatment from the fish shop and all is well so far. Thing is I was told to take out the carbon filter. I said I didnt know which that was and I was told the black one (internally). Only thing is there are 2 black ones, so Ive removed these. The instructions also say remove the Zealot filter. There is one filter left in the tank, and its all white things in it. Is this the Zealot one. If so and thats removed there will be NO filters in the tank. Is this ok.

Question is, should they be left in some tank water (they will have to stay out of the tank for at least another 12 days) or is it ok to have them dry out. Also Im not sure if the two of them are the carbon filters, does it make a difference if one isnt and its still left out.

Greatly appreciate any help!

I don't know about Zealot, sorry, but you can put a piece of (new, clean) sponge in the filter. This will make sure no big pieces of muck can go back into the water, but there's nothing in the sponge to absorb the medicine from the tank. It's what I did when I got whitespot in one of my tanks, and it worked very well.

I would also throw the filter cartridges out and get new ones. You probably don't wanna be putting them back in the filter incase any of the bacteria is on them as it will go back into the water.

Change 1/2 the water during a gravel vac. Raise the temp to 87-88 degrees and add a little salt. Keep it like that for 2 weeks. Do another 50% water change using same temp water and SLOWLY bring the temp back down.

Do not lower the temp quickly, it will kill and/or stress your fish.

the carbon filter will take out the "goodness" of the cure apparently. its a brand new tank and the filters are near spotless so is it ok for them to dry out over the next week or so before I put them back in, or will them drying out kill the good stuff in them

having them out of oyxgenated water for anything more than an hour will start to kill off any bacteria in the sponges, so after 2 weeks I'd image them to be pretty dead, but you might be able to re-use them. I haven't any experience with your filter type, but its its just like a sponge thing, you might be able to dis-infect it with boiling water and re-use it.

On the other hand, if its a special bacteria impregnated thing, I'd imagine its dead for good.
