Hi all, hoping for some guidance !
I have just started my set up, and have 5 neon tetras and 4 corys.
I would love to add to this either snails, frogs, crabs or all 3 !
Can you tell me what are no-go's and what will live happily with my current fish? Just for reference, in time i would like to also get a dwarf plec and a siamese fighter but if all are not compatible i will have to decide which ones to sacrifice in order to maintain a happy tank !
Many thanks in advance, and any info on any of these creatures that i should know would be greatly appreciated. :dunno:

How big is your tank ? If you have a enough space, I’d suggest a larger school of neons and also a couple of more cories. What cories do you have by the way ?
Crabs in a community tanks is a very definite no-no. Unless you’d like nipped fins – especially your cories. And your neons might start disappearing too.

Siamese fighters (Bettas) are best kept in their own tank with low level (not strong) filtration.

An ACF (African Clawed Frog) should be fine.

Snails are fine too, but remember that they also produce waste !

i have a red claw crab in my 260 litre aquarium as i thought it would be suitable for the community but acting upon advice i am going to rehome it before i add any fish lol
dont make my mistake

First of all, what size is your tank? Is it cycled?

The neons would really appreciate one or two more neons for their school. They are most comfortable in groups of six or more. What kind of plants/decorations/substrate do you have?

I would not recommend the siamese fighting fish with the neons. VERY rarely, they can be kept together, but the majority of the time, the neons will nip the fighter's fins and harass him, sometimes even killing him, if infection does not kill him first.

I believe the frogs would be fine. Crabs and snails are both heavy polluters, so you would want to be aware of the size of the tank and what it can handle in terms of waste. Plecs are also heavy polluters, and you want to be absolutely certain of the size your plec would grow to. I am not sure about compatibility with crabs. I know snails and plecs would get along with your other fish, though.

Hope that helps. A little more info on tank size and set up would help too. :)

As bloozoo mentioned, crabs aren't a good idea especially with slow moving fish. They are probably fine during the day but when the lights go out, they will end up grabbing another fish. You will probably end up with more than just nipped fins , like missing fish, especially with small fish like neons and corys.

won't an acf eat the smaller species of fishies. They get pretty big. I'd think an adf or two would be a better choice especially if it's a smaller tank.

Many thanks guys for all the advice !
I thought crabs were a long shot but it was worth asking. For your information the tank is only 30 litres so its very small, i was not going to add any more fish to this setup as i imagine its near to the limit.
But i have been offered at least 2 other larger tanks, at least 3x bigger, so i am looking at the possiblity of increasing my setup when i aim to move house in about 3 or 4 months time. My tank at the moment is my first, to see that i am going to be able to keep up all the work and time needed for healthy fish without getting too heavily into all the serious fishes and suffering any losses, but i like to think i reguarly check water quality and feed as needed, and perform regular water changes without incident so i imagine i will evolve my setup !
Thanks again.
Oh yes, and just in case you were wondering the tetras are neon ones and the corys are sterbai's i believe ??
One more question on snails, i saw some in a aquatic place a while back far from home, which had orange shells..... very pretty, but have never seen them since and internet trawing has failed to tell me what they are....
Any ideas ?? ????

30 litres is less than 8 US gallons, so you are already over the limit.

Get those larger tanks and wait until they are setup before increasing the numbers.
