Before I begin, let me clarify that the tanks I am talkinga bout are wide/regular tanks, not tall tanks.

I have been wanting to set up a fish tank for some time. I was thinking of getting a 20 or 30 gallon tank, and putting it in my basement room. I was looking on the internet for tanks, and for a 30 gallon tank, it would be about $166. Is that average? What is average for 20 gallon? I thought I saw a 30 gallon tank at my local petstore the other day, with a stand for $120. Does that tanks sound like it would be pretty good? and also, would a undergravel filer be suffecient filtration for the tank, assuming I float the gravel in 1/4 of the tank bi-monthly?

Thanks,
Alex

I dont know what the pricings are since i don't know where you're from....imo, the bigger the better and you can even consider a tank larger than a 30 gallon if you have the money. Undergravel filters are not good filters especially when you have to clean them....they are also not good filters if you plan on having plants in the aquarium as they disturb the roots of plants...A great filter would be an external canister or if your low on money, an external power filter such as an aquaclear will suffice...I would most prefer external filters than internal filters...
