Im going to start putting a lot of plants in my tank and one of those plants are going to be some hairgrass and Im wondering if I should be concerned about it being like a weed. Do aquatic plants need root space or will it not bother the other plants?

It depends on the conditions you provide, most plants have the ability to become invasive if the right conditions prevail, but usually nothing some select pruning cannot cope with.

There are many different grass species, so it really depends on which one you choose and the conditions you provide as to how invasive it will become, if you have a low light tank i wouldnt worry about it as plants will grow a lot slower anyway.

So bascially a low light keeps it in check but in high light it covers everything

P.S sorry for delayed post

I'm no expert but it doesn't sound like you are, either. So I'll venture a comment. I have hairgrass and far from being invasive I ended up almost completely wiping it out. It survived but barely, and is making a comeback in my tank. Maybe it could be invasive in the right conditions but my tank was obviously not that. So, I would say if you are a newbie to plants, don't worry about plants taking over, just be glad if they survive your newbie stage! And give it plenty of light, it will do better.
