I posted this in the welcome section because the emergencies section said I could not post a new thread...any suggestions? Here's my story, sorry for the lengthy explanation:

I currently have a 39 gallon tank with lots of platy's, a few danio, and an algae eater. We set up the tank well over a month ago because one of our platy's had about 9 fry, 7 of which survived. Not wanting to give away any of the new fish, we set up a large enough home for the whole family. After we did a water change in which my numbskull boyfried said that we didn't need to condition the water, we could just fill it back up with tap nbecause that was what the employee at the local tropical fish store said, two of our platy's died. Now, the same platy is definitely pregnant again. She has most of the same physical symptoms, rounded almost exploding belly that has recently squared off. However, I recently noticed that she seems to have off-white colored "bubbles" of a sort around her back end, and she is not eating very much. In the last day she has been stuck on bottom for the most part, almost like she's too fat to go to the surface. Should I be worried??? And will she keep having fry so that I will eventually have to give them away??

:hi: hi
what is your exact stocking numbers?
did you cycle the tank?
what are your water stats?( ammonia, nitrite, ph, nitrate)
if you have male and female platys they will keep breeding.

Lloyd

Welcome, yes, every female in the tank (even the ones who are currently babies) will keep having fry every 4-5 weeks and once they are into their middle ages, they will easily have 50 odd fry every time. It is not unusual for most livebearers to have anywhere from 30 to 150 fry per drop.

The bubbles.. please search for images of white spot and (fish) fungus, do they look like either of those?

Well...Thank you for all of your suggestions. "Prego," as I fondly called her because she's always been pregnan,t passed. The "bubble" looking stuff must have been a fungus or something, it was definitely abnormal. As far as the the stats on the water go, I do not know as of right now...we never saw the need to have one before as we never had any problems with the smaller tank, but I will definitely be getting a kit now... And my boyfriend is no longer allowed to clean the tank as in doing so I'm assuming he killed my favorite fish, Prego, along with two other fish in the tank. I guess I'm going to have to find out who needs some extra fish if these are going to keep breeding!! I don't want them to get overcrowded..do aquarium retail stores accept donated fish?? Thanks for all of your comments...MaggieMay

Sometimes, it really depends on the shop! If you find a good local shop, they will probably take the fry.. the other option is to keep only males :)
