Newbie Needing Help

hi everyone, this seems like a very friendly site and im glad ive found you!

im a newbie to the whole thing so am looking for some advice,

i bought a tank last week a juwel 96 rekord, im doing my fishless cycling at the moment and havent added any ammonia im getting really confused as there are lots of conflicting views about how to set up the tank etc.

i bought my tank last mon 21 april, i have put water in and dechlorinator and monitored the temp etc, bought im confused about the ammonia, (i havent put any in). im taking my water on mon 28 april to be tested at the fish store near my house, what do u think, is the woman in the store talking nonsense or what?

please help

Depends on what shes told you to do, it isn't clear to me i the above post

What you realy need to do once you get to the store, is buy yourself a liguid drop master kit You will need to test daily in the early stages of your cycle, and twice daily in the latter stages. It would be rediculously expencive to do that by paying the shop, and they wouldn't test daily for four weeks sold, free of charge

Regards to ammonia addition, I'd do the add and wait method, where you add enough ammonia to raise to 5ppm, and wait fo rit to drop before adding any more. This is what works fo rme, but there are other ways of doing things, some more ethical than others

thanks for getting back to me,
i have not added any ammonia at all, i set up my tank last monday 21st april, so would you suggest gettin some ammonia and putting it in from now ? would i need to add anything else to the tank at this stage?

Yes, I'd start adding ammonia as soon as you have a test kit IME it is better to have a tank with just a heater and filter fitted, as algea will get everywhere.

Keep the temp higher than usual while you cycle though, as it will speed the cycle. The higher the better at this stage realy
