Is it normal to have this much debris on the bottom? the tank had a 10% water change last saturday.

hi and welcome 2 TFF :) the debris is from the plec basically fish poo plecs are huge waste producers and need extreamly good filtration 2 cope with the amount of waste that they produce :) also wot size tank is he in from the first picture tank looks a little small :( also a 10% water change really isnt big enough try 20-30% maybe a little more and that will keep water quality much better :)

hope this helps

Hi Dean and welcome :)

As suggested by Jen, try to get some bigger water changes done on the tank and make sure they get done at least once a week. The water has a yellow tinge to it, which is often associated with a lack of water changes.
You could put a picture on the back of the tank and that would help the rainbowfish look nicer. Also rainbowfish are schooling fish and need to be kept in groups. If you could add another 6 rainbows then the one in the tank would be happier.
You could add some more plants like Swordplants and Hygrophillas. These can be planted in the back half of the tank. The plant that is covered in algae is Anubias and is a marsh plant that doesn't grow really well under water.
Adding some aquarium plant fertiliser to the tank each week, (or if possible, every few days) would help the plants grow and look better. Sera Florena is a good basic fertiliser that can be added a couple of times a week and will make a difference to plant growth.
