WOO! Hello from a newbie fish mama! I have a problem with one of my son's mollies. I don't think I would care too much,e xcept this is the son that really reacts badly to dying fish :( So if this is the start of some kind of sickness, I want to nip it now.

Tank size: 10 gallon
pH: 6.8
ammonia: I don't have an ammonia level on my testing strip :(
nitrite: 0.5
nitrate: 40
kH: 120
gH: 150
tank temp: 80

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): I see no physical signs of illness, no paches, ich, etc.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 15% maybe every 3 weeks.

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: Uhm, I don't know what this means. The only things I add to the tank are typical water conditioners and Prime to new water at water changes. I also add a tablespoon of aquarium salt for every 5 gallons of water.

Tank inhabitants: 4 adult mollies (1 male, 3 female), maybe 7 or 8 molly fry (5 are approx. 3 weeks old, 3 are brand new as of yesterday)

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): no new decorations. new fry as of yesterday (I think there were 4 total, but 1 is gone as of this morning).

Exposure to chemicals: None.

My molly's main symptoms are laying at the bottom of the tank, which is unusual for this particular fish...usually very active. Now it's only active if another fish gets near it. In fact, I've put her in a net breeder today because another fish kept "attacking" her, and I was scared of a nipping problem. However, I am almost positive that I've read that mollies don't like nets at all, and I don't want to keep her in there if it's going to make things worse. I do have plants on the tank, but the other fish is literally chasing her around no matter where she hides.

So..help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your tank is trying to cycle. This means that you will need to do water changes every two days would probably be good. Try doing a 25% water change every two days. Check out This here on cycling. It will help explain to you what is happening with your tank.

Also your tank is starting to get full of fish, especially with those fry now. Just be sure you don't buy any more fish to add to the tank.

You could try adding aeration to the tank as this would help give the fish more oxygen.

Also do you have like a cave or barrel or something like that that your fish can hide in?
How long have you had the tank running?

Thanks for the reply fishkies! Unfortunately, I came home from work to find a dead molly :-( Now I have a crying 5 year old on my hands, trying to explain the death of a pet to him...again. I will definitely read up on cycling. I did a fishless cycle when I first got the tank almost 2 months ago. I am not planning on buying anymore fish for that tank, as it's getting rather crowded. In fact, I'd like to take some of the babies and move them over to my 29 gallon tank, but I'm not so sure that's a good idea.

I do have a bubble wand under the gravel, so it's got aeration...do you think I should add another? It seems so...bubbly, lol. I think it's an 8" wand...the smallest one my aquarium had.

And no...I don't have anything like that in the tank...just plastic plants (several...I think 6 all together). Maybe I'll go get a barrel.

I think your fine with the bubble wand you have. If you really want you could add another, however you really don't need it.

Sorry to hear about your loss. :rip:
