hi all, i've been doing loads of research but I've still got alot of questions, i'll start with just a few so if you could pass on some of your knowledge it would be much appreciated. I'm looking to buy either the jewel reckord 96 or rio 125, any major differences to these other than the capacity they hold ? How many fish, I read somewhere that a good guide is 1 inch of fully grown fish to 1 gallon of water ? Does this sound about right, if so is that a uk gallon or a us gallon ? Might sound stupid but i want to get the best out of my aquarium ! I'm sure there'll be plenty more questions in the future so I apologise now !!

cheers

Yes 1 inch to 1 gallon is a good ratio to go by, Juwel make very good and high quailty aquariums, you may want to read the pinned threads at the top of this section as they have alot of valuable information.

Hi Charlton,

I've just purchased a Juwel Rekord 96 myself and highly recommend that make.
I'm not sure if there's actually much of a different between the models, except you may be able to get a good deal on the Rekord 96 due to it being a discontinued model now. They look very similar to me, apart from the coloured finish on the Rio tank as opposed to the plain black Rekord.

I'm still cycling mine, so haven't added any fish yet, but have been thinking about options.
I don't think anything is set is stone regarding stocking levels, but I'm planning to be cautious and just go for smaller fish and keep the numbers at a sensible level.
I figured it's best to slightly understock and add a few more later, than to overstock from day 1 and have problems.
I personally am basing my stocking ideas on 1" per US gallon, even though I'm British. Only because there are conflicting ideas and by choosing US gallons over imperial I can keep a few extra fish :shifty: hehe

thanks for your reply, i think i'll go for the rekord 96 to be honest, probably get it tomorrow and start cycling ! I'm really baffled though for what fish to go with, have you given it any thought as to what your going to put in yours ?

Well there's a lot of choice out there so it's down to what you like.
But here's what I have in mind:

6 black neon tetra
6 glowlight tetra
3 honey gourami (1 male, 2 female)
5 corydora (I like the 3-lined, or maybe bronze)
a few amano or rock shimp

I also like the look of cherry barbs so that's something else for me to think about while the tank is cycling.

But I think those 20ish fish will be a good start while I get used to looking after fish :)
