Hi I recently started up a 90 gallon tank roughly 4 weeks ago. It has a 405 Fluval canister filter. When I go to remove the filter pads and clean them in water from the tank how do I do this? Do I just turn it off and open the top of the canister or will the water come out? Is there a way to pump the water out of the canister first before opening it? My tank sits on carpet and I dont want to drench it.

not familiar with that filter in particular. But most have taps on the inlet and outlet pipes. I normally put my filter into a bowl prior to opening, just in case (well I always manage to spill at least half a cupful :)

don't overdue the cleaning though, just clean out one sponge (or media tray) each month (assuming you are doing it monthly.

i geuss you need to turn the pump of then clean the pads would be more sense really dont know if that helps

Turn off the pump. There are 2 levers on teh top, near the hoses. Push them both down (or up, i forget), the upper black one first . This will seal the hoses and unlock the connector assembly. Then pull off the hose-connector asssembly (the entire thing in 1 piece). You can then tip the canister over and pour out some of the water, then open it.
