Hello everyone I am new here. I have an empty 55 gallon, cycled tank. I was hoping someone could share with me a link to a website where I can get information on the different types of fishes. I am not sure what type of freshwater fish I would like put in my tank. I used to have a book on the different types of fish but, unfortunately, I can not find it. Thank you so much for any help you can give.
Looking forward to meeting you everyone!

hello and welcome!
this site has a lot of profiles of various species. its a good place to start. also the pictures, videos and journals might give you some inspiration for scaping and stocking.
of course, any questions you have run them by the folks on here who are very quick and keen to help. 55 gallons is a good size, so you will have a lot of choice - do you want community? or cichlids (either american or african)? or maybe an oddball / predatory tank..? lots for you to consider/look into!

Hi there, Thanx so much for the warm welcome. You know,I am embarrassed to say that I have no clue what I want to stock my tank with.. lol. Oddball or predatory sounds very interesting but I guess it will depend on how much experience I would need to have to take care of those types of fish. I don't have much experience at all.

Thanx again for the warm welcome and the info. Looks like I have a lot of research to do. ;0)

My best advice would be to have a look around your LFS (local fish shop) to get some idea of the things you like. Then you can come home and research those, or related or similar looking species.

Knowing the pH and hardness of your water helps, as it is much easier to get fish that suit your water than try and change the water.

Thanx so much for the warm welcomes. I looked around at the LFS today and I am thinking I want a community tank. I am really loving the Mollies and Guppies. Going to go and research them now. Thank you agian for the warm welcomes and the advice.

welcome mate. everyones got to start somewhere. by being here your definately starting off better than i did. as you say your new i'd go for a community tank. guppies, swordtails, mollies and platys. very easy to keep. their all (livebearers) they breed all the time and you can get some really nice colours. as your tank is around the 250 litre mark (i'm no good with my phones converter) you could quite easily pick most fish in moderation. livebearers are quite hardy fish (takes alot to go wrong before they die so to speak). i started with these fish and with the help off the ppl on here are slowly moving from a communtity tank to a malawi set up. theirs so much info on here it takes quite a while to digest it all. but thats a good thing. oh now you tell me tut i thought LFS was like an american KFC. (that took me a while to workout) lol

Hi thanx so much for the reply. My tanks' hardness is: 150ppm and the ph is 6.8.
I was thinking I would really like a dalmation Molly, they are so beautiful, but I have read that they need aquarium salt added to the tank. Do you have to put salt in the tank if you want Mollies? I am only wondering cuz I am not sure what other fishes I will want in the future. Are there some breeds of fishes that I could not have if I add the salt to my tank fo rthe Mollies?

Welcome to the forum... :)

Thanx for the warm welcome. The fish in your avatar is just gorgeous! May I ask what it is? Absolutely beautiful!

LOL! Took me a while to figure that one out too! LOL

Thanx for the warm welcome and the advice. Yes, I definitely want to go with a community tank. I am hoping for a few Guppies and Mollies.

I dont keep Mollies but have known people have success with them without adding salt to the water, I would go with platies though myself! The fish in his avatar is a male guppy.

Welcome to the forum.I have had Dalmation mollies in my tank for the last 3 months without adding salt.I would recommend buying a good hoover for your tank because all they do is poo!
