USA,
apart from rams, what other cichlids can be kept in a 29g sucesfully?

Angels, kribs, yellow labs, convicts, discus, ...

any of the above will work well but here is a couple more, Blue Acaras, Jewels, Keyholes, Jade eye.

PS: you could keep one of all those in that tank as well unless you want a breeding pair.

i do like those Blue Acaras. and would a fire mouth count as a dwarf, as they only get to be 6 inches, and some of the dwarfs get to be about that size.

Firemouths, severums or convicts might work in a 29, although that's about as small a tank as you should go with them. Best bets would be apistos, keyholes or checkerboards.

I remember when i had a 29g when i was younger n had 3 jewels,1 common plec, n some other fish. This story is off topic but wat the hell here it is: I bought sum young juvy's n kept them for a year or more. They were very red and really cool. N then 2 of the 3 always hanged out with each other and started to become very territorial. A couple weeks later i see lil white things swimming everywhere and i finally realize i have jewel fry. I was 12 at the time so i didnt know anything special besides feed them daily and change the water monthly. The fry grew n grew larger as each day passed and i didnt have anything to do with it besides drop cichlid sticks into the tank and watch one of the jewels go up n get a stick bring it back down chew it up and spit it back out so the fry can eat it. They were very good parents. Then i sold my 29g n gave my aunt all the jewels and w/e fish i had in the tank, n went out n bought a 55g.

thats exciting. i did want to breed jewels once, but didnt like their aggresiveness.

i do like convicts and severums quite a bit. I would though, like to keep my two gouramis in there, but if not i do have a 20 gallon they can go into.

and i was also thinking about planting the tank, i wouldnt want them to disturb the tank that much. thats why i was thinking that NW's minght be the best bet of cichlids.

Severums are not a good idea for a 29gal tank. If you do choose to go with Convicts it will most likely end up being a species tank because of the lack of space and extreme aggression of Cons. If your looking for a community tank then Keyholes or Kribs would be the best option.

IMO, Severums are way too big for a 29g. I wouldn't keep a Sev in anything less than a 55g.

What kind or gourami is it?

I have an blue gourami in with my NW's (con, firemouth, parrot, salvini), and he gets along fine.

Also, if you want to plant the tank, I've heard cons and firemouths can be bad diggers. I've never kept live plants with mine.
Apistos would be great for a planted tank.

If your going to breed something, I'd recommend breeding a fish that you will get store credit for the fry. Most places won't give you anything for jewels, cons, or firemouths because they are so common.

blue and Opaline Gourami, but the Opaline has a bit of black on it, like camoflage. its odd looking,

i already do have some kribs, but they are in their oen tank waiting to get paired up. I also do like that aspito's, yet ive never seen them at my store and the price is very high for a bunch of them.

Yello labs are pretty cool to keep in that size tank :)
But they are extremely aggressive (Compared to most cichlids previously discussed) and need harder water. Blue gouramis would either be killed by the fish, or be ill because of the water :)
