We just bought a used 100 gallon tank and the glass looks good and is 1/2 in thick. The only thing is on the bottom it looks like is has been resealed or had extra sealant put on it and we were wondering if there was a way to see if it was fish safe before we transferred our saltwater fish over to it? We don't want to lose any fish and if there is not a way can we scrape it all off with a razor blade? My husband said that he seen something that you could use to melt the sealant and I was wondering if we would be able to get all of it off if we used it. Has anyone done this? I would rather have a way to test it so we won't have to scrape everything off.

is there any way of contacting the original owners of the tank to ask them what type of sealant they used? Or at the very least if they kept fish in it after they did the repair? I can't think of anyway to test if it's aquarium safe....

I don't know if we can talk to the owners. We bought it at the Habitat for Humanity store. My SIL works there and she said she did not know what they had in it or why they even donated it. It also came with the cabinet that goes underneath so I am assuming they had fish but it is better to be safe than sorry. I don't want to kill fish by putting them in it.

I would cut it away but be careful as you will scratch the glass with a stanley blade

Then I would re-seal it with aquarium sealer!!

If you aint very good get a decorator or builder (i'm sure you know one) to do it for you!

The best trades person for sealing is a window fitter or car windscreen fitter!
