Hello everyone I just joined last night. My name is Charles, I am 31 and live in York, PA. I've never had a salt water setup but have had freshwater all my life. That being said....help please!
I was unable to convince the wife to let me purchase a 55g or 90g tank which from reading several articles is what most recommend as the optimal sizes for starting out. The wife is concerned that I am not going to be able to keep things alive and does not want a big tank laying around afterward. (She of little faith!) So I pulled out an older 30g glass tank from storage that was used as a freshwater setup for years. The tank is in nice shape, no cracks, holds water, but was severely covered in dirt inside and out. I cleaned the inside of the tank with a warm saltwater mix and brush and then used fresh water to rinse it out. The outside was cleaned with windex. After a good cleaning, it looks almost new in condition.
Question 1: Is there anything else I should do to prep the tank before going any further? I've purchased several books and no-one gives a good answer on converting a tank from freshwater to salt and espeacially when the tank has sat for awhile and was disgustingly dirty.
Question 2: Not being overly concerned with money, does any recommend certain product lines for filtration, purification, chemicals, lighting, test equipment, saltwater mix, and so on....?
I dont mind dropping an few bucks on good products if it's going to assist me in keeping my marine life healthy and living long.
As far as themes for tanks go. I was hoping for a mini-reef with a couple of fish just to help keep the natural habitat look. But can I create a mini-reef in a 30g tank? Some books say yes and others dont recommend it. So confusing.
Anyway, in an attempt not to bore poeple with serval questions that should probly be in other topics I will leave this post for now. Thanks for your time reading this and any help you can offer.
