Hi i am intersting in setting up a cichlid tank i have freshwater but i have a community 30 gal i want to change it to full cichlid was wondering if you can help out few basic questions .. 1 the ones im talking about is the african the regular ones like plain blue or plain yellow .. like i see those in my lfs but there in brackish water tank... i thought they was freshwater? and im wondering how many can i put in a 30 gal? i would appreicate your help Thanks

I would say 7-10 fish should be fine in your 30 gallon. The blue and yellow i dont know in specific which ones your talking about.. It could be any but likely electric yellows/yellow labs and Cobalt blue zebras? Thats my guess.. They are freshwater fish.. Some people but cichlid salt in to get the Chemistry about that of the african rift lakes.. The again are freshwater and i dont think its nescissary to add the salt although i do myself occasionally.. You will need many caves and hiding spaces.. The fish each need their own territory "home".. The ph also needs to be slightly on the basic side.. That covers most of the basics..

The first thing is that you are correct, this is a freshwater tank. They come from water with a very high mineral content that makes it hard and alkaline but it is by no means brackish, which is merely high salinity.

Because of the aggressive nature of these fish a 30 gallon is considered small for them. It's still possible to assemble a decent long term tank but it means being selective about the species that go in. You say yellow and blue, but really that doesn't mean much. Do you have any names for these fish you've seen? What does the fish store call them?

at the lfs they call them assorted african cichlids for about 2.99 each.. i think maybe there the eletric blues and yellows.. also they have them in brackish water.. so if i get them i can put them straight in my freshwater?.. and anyone know anywere i can get rocks? i live in nyc.. bronx.. they sell them but about like 1.49/lb and there not even that big.. and its not even many.. and i would like alot Thanks
