Hi everyone, fist time posting here... I am setting up a 20 gallong tank for my son Matthew who is three. I did have one of my own about 20 years ago, but have since been out of the hobby.

The tank is a 20 gallon unit (24Lx12Wx14H). The water in my community (southern ontario canada) is hard, and a little bit alkaline. I have always been partial to cichlids. Are there any cichlids that are less aggressive to keep.

I do not intent to put more than 6-7 fish in the tank.

I would appreciate any other advice about fish and what some of you out there would recommend as well.

Thanks

Hey!

Kribs in my experience are pretty docile unless breeding, and full of character! I think they are best kept in a pair rather than 6-7 though.

two of my favorit cichlid is the african butterfly fish, it is stunning the butterfly fish is also an odd ball, all dwarf cichlids are very docile and many of them are very colorfull they can even be kept with neons, i would recomend doing something to your water to get it softer seeing as all south american cichlids like soft water and they are the best in my opinion.

EDIT:eek:k seriously I havn't sleept in 26 hours so my english is bad enough without being half asleep good night fishy forms...

The African butterfly fish (Pantodon buchholzi) is not a Cichlid but the only species in the family of Pantodontidae.

There is an African butterfly CICHLID which is Anomalochromis thomasi but the two should never be confused.

hmm interesting I'm going to google them because I probably confused them about 5 times already
