Well, I've made a few posts, but I just saw this newbie board, so I thought I'd introduce myself.

My online alias is Random Wiktor, and I'm a 19 yr old female in the USA. I came to this forum because my friend Heather showed me a few topics she was involved in, and I thought it was pretty interesting.
I'm the proud parent of three beautiful male bettas, one female, three common goldfish, and a chinese algae eater, though because of the cold winter months and travelling back and forth from college, the goldies got left back home and are in the care of my wonderful mother. I'm fairly new to having fish, but I've done my best to research them well before purchasing, and hope to learn more here.
Currently, I run a miniature rescue called the "10 cent hospice." It involves buying the 10 cent feeder goldfish who are fatally ill (usually floaters or stuck to the filter) and giving them a warm, quiet, private environment to pass away in. I also will do this for bettas and rosy reds. I've actually had a number of fish who seemed to be on their last legs bounce back with some medication and clean, warm water, though some had lingering health problems from a rough start and were short lived as a result.
I hope to one day expand my sick betta "rescuing" efforts, and distribute info on the proper care of siamese fighting fish around the campus since so many students keep them (often times inadequately). Currently I only have room for about 7 or 8 five gallon tanks (the minimum I'll keep bettas in and unfortunately the maximum my campus allows) and 5 little 2.5 gallon tanks for newly arrived "hospice" fish, but when I'm out of college and on my own, I want to get some 10's and 20's for permenant pets and keep the 5's for sickies as most doses are hard to break down into 2.5 gallons.

Well, I'm blabbing, but its nice to be here and I'm sure you'll see me roaming around the forum when I'm not busy with classes and fish ^^

Honestly? I just feel bad for them. The fish I currently have just have these great personalities and are so full of life; it seems pathetic that others are dying in cold, dirty plastic cups for no reason other than the pet store's greed. While I realize I'm probably funding it by buying the sick ones, I do get refunded whenever possible for those who pass away, and frankly their death losses are so massive that I don't think my two dollars makes much of a difference to the store.

Besides, its so rewarding and encouraging when a fish you really think will pass away pulls through; one of my absolute favorite fish right now is a red betta named Tim. He was floating on his side in a cup with almost no fins left at all from fin rot. I took him home to die, but medicated just in case, and within a week he finally started eating. He never got big because he couldn't eat well when he was little, and his fins are not very pretty, but he has such a personality! He gill flares at my room mate, likes to move the pebbles around his tank, and has a favorite plant that he sleeps in. How can anyone not want to save such interesting little animals when you know they are suffering so?

Why thankyou ^^ I suppose it would at least be a better world for feeder goldfish and bettas, at least. hehe.

:hi: to the forum ;)

Geez...I thought I was nice by taking fish out of peoples hands....so that they do not die or that are sick and are just left to die...but you win
