I used to own a pet store, had the best fish (freshwater) in Grand Rapids Michigan, but that was about 20 years ago (I fogot a lot and there seems to be a lot of new things).
I haven't had a tank set up since then. About 2 years ago I got married and moved to Hawaii. When I got here i started thinking about the tanks I used to set up and wanted to show my wife. I bought a 20gal long but decided i didn't want to set it up in a apartment because it's a pain if you have to move. So I set up a 10 gallon in my wifes classroom (she teaches kindergarden 1st & 2nd). No one ever saw a tank with live plants, in fact most only seen saltwater tanks, here in Hawaii thats whats popular cause you can just go get your fish for free with some snorkle eq.. Everyone was blown away, I just had 5 neons and a male and female beta but it did look great, the plants filled the tank front to back top to bottom so at times you had to look hard for the fish.
The next year I decided to get a real tank, bought a 55gal, the princepal gave me another 55gal and I brought my 20gal long there and set them all up.
I've had trouble with heat ( in michigan you use heaters to keep the water warm enough, here it's tough to keep the temp down) and disease as well as some bad advise from a salesman from a major pet store.
I hope that people in this forum can help me get things running smooth again.

:hi: to the forums Bryan :)

It's always nice to have someone with your experiance here.

You can get chiller units for your tanks, they maybe a bit pricey but the will keep the tank at the desired temperature. Over here in England people use them for coldwater species tanks, but I see no reason why they won't work in Hawaii to help you.

P.S. can you show us some pics of your local landscape, I have always wanted to go to the big island, but never got round to it.

welcome to the forum bryan!!
The tank in your avatar looks amazing, what fish are you going to put in there! And it looks like you are a natural at the planted tank !!
And i am very jealous of living in hawaii.. i would love to live out there, though i'd never get any work done as i'd be on the beach all day !!
