Hello everyone, my name is Justin and I live in West Virginia. I am Picking up the hobby again After being out of college for about 20 years. The last time I had a fish tank was in my parents house in high school.

I recently bought and set up a 20 gallon tall, and just started a fishless cycle last night. This forum has been a great resource for very valuable information for folks picking up the hobby.

Really looking forward to getting this cycle complete and getting some fish!

hello! i am pretty sure there is a thread for cycling, what is your gh and ph? helps determine what fish you can have, it is on your water company's website or somethig (or you can just test it yourself )

So I called my water company and they sent me their report from last year. The hardness is 128 ppm, and the ph is listed at 7.8. I have tested it though and I show it just below 7 pretty much every time. Not sure if I should be looking at any other parameters.

Fish profiles use one of two units. One is ppm, and you already have that - 128 ppm. This converts to 7.2 dH, the other unit.

You have softish water - it's suitable for most soft water fish excpet the few species which must have very soft water.

I never really thought about that as a driving factor of what fish I could get. Thanks for helping me out with that. I have seen references to seriously fish and have started checking that out to see what would be a good match for the community tank I want to set up.
