Hi, everybody!

Purchased our first tank yesterday, after thinking about getting one for a while now. We bought a Marina Style 60 (60 uk litres) kit, and have it sitting with filter and heater on, (light off at night) no fish but three plants went in today... Having read some of the other beginner threads, we might be a bit early with them? Haven't got a water test kit yet, that needs to be top of the list? Pet Shop (Pets At Home) advised a week or so before introducing fish, but this seems to be too early- water test will indicate a better time to add fish? Looks like I have waaaay more reading to do!

Thanks for all the great info in the forum - keep up the great work!

1 week before adding fish is a joke. Best advice would be to ignore most advice from your lfs, folks on here have an educated answer to any question you can ask. Take your time and persevere.

Welcome to the forum!!! :)
If you read up on shelsters article you'll be well on your way to a happy fish tank!

Can't tell you how happy I (and many others) am that you took the first great step to fishkeeping, and that's NOT getting any fish yet! All the steps will seem overwhelming at first, but just do a lot of reading and ask lots of questions. You'll have a happy aquarium in no time!

It might take a couple of weeks or more to cycle your tank - well it will be more unless you can beg some mature filter medium or gravel from a mature tank if there's someone near you in Scotland. Failing that you could try a blag some out of P@H tho don't fall for the bottled bacteria approach. They have a spectacularly high failure rate.
Patience will reward you and you will have happier, healthier fish if you can follow the advice in the article in Shelster's reply

Do you have any ideas of what fish you would like to keep?

Congratz on getting started in the world of fish-keeping. Don't trust what your fish store says about cycling, and read up about fishless cycling. Also a test-kit should be something that you get right now, as it is essential to a fishless cycling. Best of luck!
