~~~(origionally posted this on another forum, but this one looks and feels much better thanks guys!)~~~
Alrighty Alrighty. So I was offered a 55 gallon tank setup, with fish, and couldn't pass it up. Transferred it to the home without issue. Was only left with minimal water. Upon refilling the tank (almost 40 gallons) WABAM I massacred all the poor buggers. The only survivors were the 7" Leopard Sailfin Pleco's. So at midnight I started testing all the water. Not sure how I saved the buggers but I did lol. Only took till 5 AM
.
Ok, fast forward a week. I brought my water to Pestmart (yes, I know they aren't the best but it is whats near me). They said my water was perfect, but hard. I added conditioner and the Pleco's stopped trying to escape my tank. I feel so bad for the guys. As it stands now we have a couple ghost catfish, 2 pleco's, 5 snails, and some guppy's. They seem to be loving it.
For the tl;dr's
~Got fish tank 55G
~Massacred fish due to ignorance
~Hopefully fixed tank Eco-system
~Added fish and snails.
~Water conditioner added
~Bacteria Supplement added
Alright so I did a test of the water, which I am not 100% sure I did right but I followed the instructions on the master test kit cards.
Temp: 80f
PH: 6.6
Nitrate: Between 5.0 and 10.0
Nitrite: .5
Ammonia 4.0
Does this sound right for a 55G tank? Should I be working on anything? I did add a lot of water. These levels are just under 1 weeks time of adding water.
Appreciate any insight and help. Thanks and look forward to building my tank up!
Okay it sounds like your tank isn't cycled. If you could return all the fish you just bought, you'll be doing yourself a favor. Those plecos will quickly outgrow your tank so, unless you plan to have a 150+ gallon aquarium in the next few months, they'll need new homes too. If you do that, you can proceed with a fishless cycle. Otherwise, you will need to have a good long read in the cycling section. I'm going to link you to two posts about saving a fish-in cycle which will help you. For now, 90% water change. Check the ammonia after that water change. Do as many water changes as needed to get the ammonia down to about .25-.50 ppm.
Also what bacteria supplement did you use? There are really only two that work, one of those is Dr. Tim's and the other is Tetra Safe Start which can be a little tricky to use.
Thank you for the reply, sadly I am preferring the fish in. The pet store near me is horrendous and I don't have anywhere I could place my fish as a temporary home.
I used Top Fin***. Other than a fish going missing at the moment they all seem fine. I am showing no signs of distress or poisoning. There is a good fish store in a town near me that will give my some substrate for free. I do have some old filters from the origionally cycled tank (before the move) that I could squeeze into a bowl of tank water and transfer. I saw it in the part 1 and just wanted to know how others felt about it?
The fish all seem very good. Some are actually playing; there are 2 white ones that constantly chase eachother around the tank and change who the leader is. None are hanging around the top of the tank, unless I walk up too it (i think I may have been over feeding). The only oddity is the missing fish. I checked the filter and adjusted all my plants, rocks, etc. to no avail. Lil bother packed up and ran away.
*** Is it acceptable to add the supplement more than once? I did the amount it said but I was just wondering.
Thank you!!
