I have a 55 gallon. My substrate is sand. Its been set up for a few months now with some fish. I already have the lighting needed for a planted aquarium.
Since my substrate is already established I really dont want to pull it out to put a layer of that plant substrate down. Is this a must or is there some kind of tablet I can just put next to the roots?
I know about the liquid fertilizers but I just dont want the plants to suffer without anything in the substrate.

tropica capsules or API root tabs.

As long as you dose the water column heavily enough then they will be fine, although it does help to have anutrient rich substrate.
