Hello all.
I am wanting to convert my juwel rio 180 freshwater tank to a marine tank.
What I would like to know is how much of my existing hardware could I use?
And what else will I need?
I plan to stock the tank with liverock and live sand.

I have : Juwel Rio 180
2 x 39w t5's
Aquapro 3 external filter (maximum 1000lph flow)
heater, air pump etc.
And in the near future I will be buying a night lighting kit.

Cheers!

It depends on the type of setup you want... reef or fish only? I am going to convert my 180 to a marine so my urchin has more room to move and hopefully I can get my elegance coral to florish. My plan is to change the bulbs in the Jewel unit to actinic blue and then get a double 150 watt 14000K halide unit. I was going to go with a sump/refugium unit and use the internal filter box as some sort of weir overflow box thingy (I know it is all technical  ). I am going to get a series of hydor koralia 2 (possible 3) and have them producing various currents ( it's a trial and error process). So in short you can use most of the original setup but the internal filter sponges. Simple :good:. All the other stuff is related to any old marine system. If you have any more questions just ask.

Hope this helps

Regards

I plan to get about 20kg of live rock and a few kg of live rubble for my filter or sump if i have the space in the cabinet.
What I need to know is what kind of skimmer I need. What lph etc should I be looking for, for a tank of that size? I will probably try and build a sump to house it too.

Interestingly there has been a couple of threads started on this very subject within the last couple of weeks - do a search and you will find all you need to know

Cheers everyone.
I think the plan now is to not have a sump and have a hang on skimmer, altho space is an issue, there isnt much spaces behind the tank and height wise is the same near the back, so ill have to place it on the side. But im still using the normal lid.

Ive got an aquapro 3 external filter that I plan to use,
2 white 39w t5's with reflectors, 1 x actinic t8 with reflector and 1 x white 36" t8 tube for back up.
I still have the filter box that came with the tank but I took it out when i set the tank up for tropicals, might put the heater and a power head in it.

I know I will need some powerheads aswell.
