Hi i am a newbie my name is Daren and my plan is to keep a small shoal of about 10 cardinal tetras (and maybe 2 or 3 bronze catfish)in a 64 litre tank. However I tested the water straight out of the tap and it was 7 but when left for a week or so it goes up to 8, I think this is to do with the carbon dioxide coming off. Is this going to be a big problem, I have read a lot about PH on the net and half of it cotradicts the other half. I don"t really want to spend time and money chasing a PH value but would rather get fish to suit my PH (cichlids too difficult for newbie?).Thanking you in advance Daren.

Welcome to the forum Darren. My PH sits at around PH8.2 and that's just how it is out of the tap! I have 6 tetras and they are more than happy. It appears that it's only when you start messing with PH and it fluctuates that the fish seem to hate it. Most fish (except those really sensitive like discus etc) will adapt to the PH they live in. Best thing to do is research, research, research and make sure that the fish that you want will be happy in your tank.

Plants and bogwood will lower PH (I think)

If you read enough information it will end up contradicting itself!

Good luck
