Hello,

I'm looking to re-stock my son's 10G US tank after his goldfish succumbed to Ich. Right now, I'm thinking 5-6 female bettas and a couple of albino corys. Does this sound like it could work?

I'm also concerned with what sort of decorations and substrate. I know they like rest spots and caves, so I was thinking 7-8 fake plants and some assorted terra cotta pot caves. Right now I have some 3/8 in or so gravel for substrate. I installed a heater to bring the water temp up once the goldfish passed on.

Filter is a HOB bio-wheel. Would a bit of sponge attached to the outflow sufficiently kill the current, or is there a better way. I'm looking at a DIY project for that as I live in Okinawa and don't really speak the language enough to ask all the right questions at the LFS.

Looking for a bit of advice, as my son really misses his fishy. Would like to get something going soon.

Thanks,

I think I'd go with either 4-5 female bettas OR 4-5 cories. Together that is far too many fish for a 10 gallon tank. And as always with bettas, male or female, be prepared if you have to seperate them into individual tanks. Sorority set ups don't always work. Otherwise, your plans with all the plants and terra cotta pot caves sounds just about right.

well for the current killer i get a water bottle an cut the smooth part out of it(so it makes a cylinder with no top or bottom) then cut a straight line from one end to the other an make one hook over your out flow for your filter an take the other end over the top of the filter...works like a dream for my bettas :D

EDIT: hope what i just said makes any sence :p.

Thanks,

Do I need to fully scrub down/break down my tank and re-cycle (tank is currently cycled) or can I continue medicating for the Ich that was present for a few days and then maybe an anti-fungal? I've asked this question on the Beginner Forum, still waiting for guidence.

There are a couple of ghost shrimp who are still kicking around in the tank (named Juan and Two) that my son still watches. I'm concerned about what to do for them as well.

well there isnt really much to do for the shrimp i meen if the females eat them they eat them no stoping that unless you put them into a different tank...as for the ich that stuff goes away after about a week( i say a week to be safe) because it usually dies in 24-48 hours with out a host...im working on a female tank with my ten gal too an im just going to have 4 females and 1 oto...if you dont want to worry about algae get some horn wort or what ever its called i cant really remember. but it puts a chem thats non toxic to the fish into the water that makes it so algea cant grow...but it doesnt effect any other plants as far as ive known/seen.

I believe that the ich cyst dies when you empty the tank and let it air dry.
