Hi there. We just got our first "real" aquarium and decided to try out tropical fish. We had an old 10 gal aquarioum that my sister gave us with 5 goldfish, but they have since died and we decided to move on to something more involved and exciting.

2 weeks ago we purchased a 20 gal starter kit tank and set it up. 4 days ago we went to the fish store and decided to buy our first fish. We went with 2 black mollies (male and female) and 2 red platies (male and female). We thought the livebearers would be interesting and out 4 year old son would love to watch them have babies. Little did we know that the female was pregnant. On the way home she started having her babies, and until all was finally over with, she had 20 fry. Of course we were not prepared for babies, so they are in the tank with the other 4 mature fish. So far we still have over half of the fry left (I know of 3 that died).

My question is, where should we go from here? We wanted to add a few different types of fish. Any recommendations? When the molly fry are bigger we are planning on moving them to the 10 gallon tank so that will give us some more room.

Thanks,

Lisa

I would put the fry in a separate tank, nothing to big like. Then once you are happy your 20gal tank is cycled then add more fish :). Maybe give the fry back to the fish shop LOL.

Looks like a good use for the 10g if you still have it! Just add an air powered foam filter.

i'm impressed!!! must have been a sight to see...

It was quite a site to see. We actually got to see her give birth to several of them. My son was totally amazed. Every day he looks for the babies. They are so cute. I just hope next time we will be prepared and can get them into a breeder net or the other tank.

Any suggestions on other fish we can add to the tank?

i dont think you can go wrong with tetras just not sepre as they nip fins and cardinals need a tank that is very mature.
a personal favorite of mine is kribensis these are great dwarf cichlids and have so much character and if you get a pair they look after there young and well take them round the tank so your son would love to watch this i did and still do.
corydoras are great catfish and a trio always looks good in a tank.
cherry barbs are small and very colourful fish and make a good looking shoal.

good luck with watch you choose and have fun :good:
