New Test Kit

i got an api test kit today and had an ammonia reading of 0.25. no nitrite and 5ppm of nitrate. i was surprised by this. the tank has been running for a long time its only 35ltrs running an old fluval external (205). i think tank mates are 4 anchor catfish and about 10 celestial pearl danioes. plant are java moss anubias frogbit and duckweed. a few days ago i removed a section of media to seed a new tank. could this be the cause?
