hey all my name is lee.
just set up a 5 foot tank built it into my wall looks great, put a sump on it. anyway i have a question so pleas dont laugh lol.
on wens i set my tank up filled with water and put in tap safe. i have nothing in the tank apart from gravel which i cleaned really well. and bio balls and media and canister filter heater in my sump. so after filling up started my fishless cycle, but was recomended to put nutrafin cycle biological supplement in to kick start cycle. so have done all fine.got up this morning put a tiny bit of flake food in. come home from work to put day 2 of nutrafin cycle in and my water has gone cloudy i can see though it its not to bad but is this normal. is this just the bact clumping together.

thanks lee

first of Welcome to the forum and any pics sounds like an amazing tank :p

secondly i think this is no problem should be just bacteria bloom i think they call it :) i had it on my tank should clear up in a few days :)

do you also have a test kit for testing the water with some test results may help the more experienced members help you out a little more :)

yes i will upload some pictures tomorrow. tryed before but said file to big. getting test kit inthe morning so will update with results tomorrow. hope it just is bactiria bloom.

Welcome, and that sounds like a lovely tank.

Just to confirm, you havnt added any source of ammonia other than a few flakes of food? How are you going to cycle the tank?

I'm pretty sure that it's a bacterial bloom and will clear in a couple of days, nothing to worry about as there aren't any fish in there yet.

EDIT: I see your doing a fishless cycle, and I presume with household ammonia?

smells was advised that with that nutrafin cycle you dont need to add anything no amonia etc it say on bottle after 3 days you can add fish.???
also i have uploaded some photos

What they say and what they do are 2 completely different things in afraid, there have been a few success stories on here, but they are few and far between. I would seriously consider a fish-less cycle, as in that size tank, I wouldnt want to be doing daily 50-90% water changes.

ok mate i wont ad any more of that stuff. what am i best doing then im new to this??? want to tak my time to get the water spot on before adding anything to the tank. treat me like im stupid lol

Go into the beginners section at the top of this forum, and have read through the fish-less cycling thread. I would start by getting some ammonia and a testing kit (these are essential).

If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask, also set up a build log and cycle log, that way we can easily track how you are getting on, and we love pictures here lol

lol cheers mate. i wanted something special. fishless cycle looks hard. 70 90 cent water change??? took me 3 hours to fill the thing. with the sump tank as well

treat me like im stupid lol

OK then, der-brain. :good:

As SABF says, the bottled bacteria products are very hit&miss. Whilst bottled ammonia is INCREDIBLY smelly, it's the best stuff for doing a proper fishless cycle - you can control the dosage easily, and just do the whole thing very scientifically.

You don't need to do huge water changes every day, just one very very big water change 95-100% once the cycle is complete, or one if you hit problems. And no fish die, you can fully stock the tank as soon as the cycle is finished, rather than building up stock gradually.
