Hi All

New tank 150l. Have a fluval u4 inside,
I have a old tank which was 100l with some rubbish filter in.

Now that i have my new tank set up, gravel, decor, water temp, dechlorinated with new filter running, if i move my old filter over and run it along side my other, will the fish be ok if i do extra water changes ie one every two days or something,

Old tank is only stocked with about, 1 bristlenose, 2 Neons, 4 Platys and a couple of tetras.

Thanks for your replies in advance.

Hi,

If you are moving the same amount of fish from one tank to the other then that would be fine because the old filter already has enough beneficial bacteria to deal with the current bioload being produced.

Either run the old filter alongside the new filter for 4-6 weeks or better still, try put the mature media from the old filter inside the new filter, this will allow the bacteria to colonise even faster in the new filter.

Ok well ill try running the old filter along side the new one,

After 4-6 Weeks what would you advise about removing the old Filter. would the bio load not be spread between the two filters?

Also if i wanted Additional fish what would you advise / Just a few as i would when in the old tank?

Thanks

Hi,

After about 6 weeks ideally you can remove the old filter and the new filter will have enough to cope and will quickly catch up with any bioload after the old one is removed as once bacteria is present it will multiply quickly. Alternatively, if you just want to run 1 filter then you can by putting the old media into the new filter alongside the new media, this is the best way of doing it and you wont need to run your old filter at all.

You may find you need to cut your old media a bit to fit it in the new filter, or you may need to leave a bit of the new media out, but if you can get all the old media into the new filter then it will be fine :good:

Regarding adding new fish, obviously wait until the tank is stable first which will be almost straight away if you go with the transferring media option. If you go with the running both filters together then I'd wait for 6 weeks until you remove the old one, then wait another week to allow the filter to catch up with any lost bacteria from the one you removed. As before, only add a few fish at a time and test your water whenever adding fish to keep an eye out for any small ammonia spikes until the filter catches up to the new bioload.
