Im currently setting up a 20g tank! I have all my bits and bobs ready to go..... But my sister already has a tank setup and its been up and running for over 2 years now, i was wondering if i put my new filter in her tank and switch it over to my tank, would i be able to just but fish straight in without doing any cycles??

Also im going to have sand instead of gravel, is there any tips on how to first build it? and clean it?

Cheers :)

Ps - think i myt go for a couple of puffer fish in there :)

just wash it through (the sand)

and yes if you take some media from your sisters filter into your it might mature it but you will have to check. either way it will speed it up

Im just a beginner myself, so im no expert, but im pretty sure you would still have to go through the cycling process, the mature media would just speed it up somewhat.

Read the articles about fishless cycling in the beginner resource center and that should answer most of the questions running though your head.

if u take a couple of cubic inches of your sisters media, transport it in tank water, slap it in ur filter along with ur new media (u may need to cut some new media away) then ur tank will have a bacteria colony big enough to get ur starter fish (just a few) then u could allow a while for youre new media to be colonised before adding more fish.

or you could add her media, then dose with ammonia for a couple of weeks (follow fish in cycle instructions) and u will see the cycle complete within a shorter time and will be able to stock the tank fully then

I got the Impression that you meant give your sister the new filter than you have hers. This would be fine for ur tank but hers would need recycling.

You have 2 options, either take 30% of her mature filter media and put it into ur new filter to speed up the cycling process or run ur new filter in her tank with her current filter for 3-4 weeks, this is called seeding and will colonize enough bacteria in your new filter for when you put it back in your tank
