Hello
I am not new to the hobby, but have taken a break for a while. I am just restarting my little tank. I still have the 6ft monster in my living room and it was supposed to be sold, but since restarting the little tank, I keep eying the big one and picturing it with all the fish which wont fit into my little tank and I think multiple tank syndrome has set in....lol
Anyways - so far so boring. The tank was run as a marine for the last year (spent a fortune on it and still needed more stuff, so I gave up) and an accident with the filter meant that everything in the marine was dead. I cleaned out the filter, replaced the porous bits, but kept the sponges. Everything was well rinsed and then I filled the tank with water and some bleach (I had fish TB in that tank before, hopefully killed off by the marine water, but just to be sure) and switched the filter on. I did 2 complete water changes last week to start diluting the bleach down. Tonight I will empty all the water including the water in the filter and re-fill with tap water and dechlorinator. Then tomorrow empty out all the water again and then start setting it up. Unfortunately I only had Parozol as a bleach this time and I think they may be using Chloramine, as the tank still smells of chlorine. Last time I did the same thing with another tank I used cheap-cheap bleach and it stopped smelling after 2 days. I'll just give it a very good dose of dechlorinator. That should help.
I have no idea yet what fish I will be getting. I am tempted by trying out for SA Puffers again, but that would mean I cannot have shrimp. And even a Bristlenose would probably be out of the question. I had one plec before which sadly died from the fish TB and I would like to try again. If I accidentially get one that grows too big (never trust LFS with plec names), at least I have the 6ft beast to rehome if necessary.
One major issue this time round is the fact that I am skint. Absolutley skint actually. Thankfully I have bags of playsand, so thats sorted. I had spare filter material, and still have the dechlorinator from my old tank.
I have testing fluids (I think) and I found a bottle of ammonia. My ex has an established tank, so I am going to get a filter squeeze tomorrow. I am hoping I will be able to get some decent plants for about £5, cheap fast growing will do for now. I found the old lightbulbs, so I am sorted there as well. They should be ok for another 4 months or so.
I will try the fishless cycle for the first time - I really hate Danios (sorry for all of you who like them), and all the other fish I fancy are way too sensitive to be used for cycling. At least in a small tank like this. This will also mean, by the time the fishless cycle is finished next payday is here and I might be able to buy some fish.
Here is the list of fish I have considered so far - of course not all together, just throwing ideas around
Cherry Barbs
Neon Tetras
SA Puffer
Bristlenose Plec
Otos
Cherry Shrimp
Apistos
Kribs
Pygmy Puffers
Panda Cories
Chainlink Loaches
Killi Fish
Endlers
Guppies
Anything small bright and yellow (any ideas ? I haven't found a fish to fit that description yet)
Completley forgot to add the tap water specs for my area. I am afraid we can sell our water as not only liquid stone but also as ready made fertilizer. The Nitrates are very high, even the ammonia content is a bit over the top. As I haven't been able to afford RO water for years, I have been filling up a water butt with rain water (only takes a day in London, lol). My ex and me have both been using rain water for a couple of years now and it seems to work very well, just need to add the odd bucket of Tap water to make sure the water doesn't get too soft.
